Hawkenbury Primary delayed until 2020
The Hawkenbury Village Association received the following statement regarding the new primary school in Hawkenbury. Berkeley Homes have completed the groundworks on the site and handed over the ‘keys’ on 31 July 2018 as originally planned. KCC have yet to make a planning application for the site.
This means that the new primary school will not open as planned for the start of the new year in 2019. KCC are hoping to have the school completed by February 2020, but we believe this is optimistic and the school is likely to open after the Easter break in 2020.
The unfortunate impact of this is that St Peter’s will have to accommodate a further 10 reception pupils in their current location. The already overcrowded school building will have to cope with even more pupils and it is likely that some form of temporary classroom may be needed.
We will keep you updated when we hear more.
KCC Statement on the expansion and relocation of St. Peter’s CEPS to a new site in Hawkenbury
KCC has recently undertaken a statutory consultation process to commission 10 additional Reception Year places at St. Peter’s CEPS from September 2019. The scheme will also see the school relocate to a new site off Hawkenbury Road.
The new school site is due to be transferred to KCC from Berkeley Homes within the next few weeks, following the completion of ground works by the developer. Berkeley Homes has advised of some deferments from the land transfer requirements, which KCC will work to overcome in conjunction with the developer.
KCC intends to submit a detailed planning application by August/September 2018. The planning application will be for a 2FE school, with the school opening at 1FE (30 Reception Year places) initially. The new building will therefore be constructed in phases, as the demand for places increases. KCC and its contractors continue to collaborate closely with the school on the design and development of the new building, through regular engagement meetings.
It is with regret that KCC can advise the permanent school building is anticipated to be delayed until February 2020, although contractors will seek a December 2019 completion if at all possible. The delay has arisen due to a combination of site specific factors and delays in procuring a main contractor to manage the design and construction of the building project.
KCC can confirm that St. Peter’s CEPS will proceed with the expansion of the Reception Year intake for September 2019, enabling 10 additional places to be available to serve local children, as planned. The additional pupils will be accommodated for the temporary period in safe and suitable accommodation within the existing school grounds, achieved through reconfiguration of existing buildings and outdoor space.
