One Stop update
The refurbishment of the shop threw up a few surprises for the contractors and that is why it has taken so long to complete. Apparently, back in the 1980’s, whoever refurbished the shop cut a few corners. Rather than dispose of all the waste off site, they deemed it a good idea to dump it all in the basement. The basement was then promptly concreted over to create a new floor.
With the investigation work regarding the rat infestation, the basement was discovered and opened. Normally, this would not be an issue, but the rubble in the basement contained brown asbestos and this had to be be removed and disposed of. This is why you have seen the asbestos removal vans outside the One Stop for such a long time. At one point, they were removing 500 bags of rubble a day. This work has all been completed now.
One Stop (and Tesco) have restarted the internal refurbishment and Tesco HQ have confirmed that they hope to have the shop open by mid November. We’ll update you when we know more on an exact date.
